Months before I ever left for Alaska, a fellow director talked me into seeing his production of Rent, a show I'd always found a little dated, until his staging changed my mind completely. In the middle of it was a young actor named James Newton, whose performance as Mark Cohen stuck with me long after the curtain closed. I didn't expect to see him again three thousand miles north, starring as Soapy Smith in a hundred-year-old outlaw melodrama in Skagway, Alaska, but there he was. What started as a small-world reunion became a full documentary project: a portrait of a hometown actor taking a real risk, set against a frontier town with a surprisingly out-and-proud queer community rooted in the Red Onion Saloon's century of drag history. This is the kind of work I chase, not the postcard version of a place, but the actual story standing in front of it.
